House or Flat? Which One Should I Buy?

Houses and flats have some pretty obvious differences, and they each have their own benefits and drawbacks. Something that is a benefit for one person can be a drawback for another because everybody has different wants and needs.

The Size

There are some considerable differences in size between homes and flats. This is possibly one of the most important things for people who are looking to purchase a property. If you are planning to live alone, then the flat may be the better choice out of the two, simply because they are a lot smaller. Whereas, if you have a family, then you might want to consider buying a house. While you can get flats that are large enough for families, houses are still bigger and offer you a lot more space, especially as they will have a garden, and flats may not.

The Location

You will typically find flats in city/town centres, close to the busy areas. This can be a great benefit, especially if you work in the city and do not want to travel too far. If you want to live somewhere quieter and further away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then a house may be the better option for you.


With a house, you are in full control of the maintenance. You are the one who has to fix everything or organise for another person to come and fix it. If you are a busy person this can be very frustrating and time-consuming, so that is something that you should consider. Whereas, in a flat, there will more than likely be a maintenance team. You simply have to notify them of the issue and they will sort it out for you which is perfect for a busy person. With a house, you can also get all sorts of problems, such as rat infestation. This is less likely if you purchase an apartment that’s at a higher level, especially as it will be considered a building problem rather than an individual case.

The Cost

Both options are pretty pricey, and it is very different to compare the costs between the two of them as they are completely different to one another. However, it can be said that in most terms, a flat will be a little cheaper than a house. This is because they are typically smaller, therefore they will be warmer and will not cost as much as a house would when it comes to using the heating. When it comes to other monthly payments, the mortgage cost for a house could be less than monthly rent costs, so that is something that you should consider too.
